Hyundai G4ED

The 1.6-liter 16-valve Hyundai G4ED engine was produced in Korea from 2000 to 2012 and was installed on the group’s most popular models, such as Accent, Elantra, Matrix and Getz. There were two versions of this unit: with and without a CVVT type phase regulator at the inlet.

Hyundai Elantra model

In 2000, the 1.6-liter engine of the Alpha family debuted on the Hyundai Elantra model. Structurally, it was a classic power unit with distributed fuel injection, an in-line cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head with hydraulic compensators and a combined timing drive, it consisted of a belt and a short chain between the camshafts.

Hyundai Elantra

The first modifications of this engine developed from 103 to 107 hp and from 141 to 146 Nm of torque. In 2005, a version with an inlet dephaser appeared, which developed 112 hp and 146 Nm. Such a power unit was installed on the Kia Rio and Cerato, as well as some versions of the Hyundai Elantra.

The Hyundai G4ED engine is a 1.6-liter gasoline inline-four engine. Here are some technical parameters for this engine:

  1. 1. Displacement: 1.6 liters (1599 cc)
  2. 2. Cylinder arrangement: Inline-four
  3. 3. Valvetrain: DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft)
  4. 4. Fuel system: Multi-point fuel injection (MPI)
  5. 5. Compression ratio: Approximately 10.5:1
  6. 6. Power output: Depending on the application and tuning, power output can vary, but it's typically around 105 to 110 horsepower.
  7. 7. Torque: Torque output also varies but generally falls in the range of 143 to 148 Nm (105 to 109 lb-ft).
  8. 8. Fuel type: Gasoline (petrol)

The G4ED engine has been utilized in various Hyundai models, including the Hyundai Accent (also known as Hyundai Verna or Hyundai Avega in some markets) and the Hyundai Elantra (also known as Hyundai Avante in some markets).

Q: In the US, how much does it cost to rebuild a Hyundai G4ED 1.6L DOHC engine after its timing belt fails?

A: Rebuilding any engine today is financial suicide for any shop.

It is far cheaper to install a low mileage used engine.

Rebuilding an engine is a minimum of 20 to 30 hours at 100 dollar per hour.

That does not include r & r !

It is not a smart choice by the shop or the customer.

But if you insist of having a new engine then buy a new engine. Very….very expensive but at last you will have a warranty.

Timing belts do not fail if replaced according to the maintenance schedule.

In my 40 years as a technician I have never seen a belt fail if changed when it was scheduled to be changed.

A badly maintained Hyundai is not worth spending money rebuilding an engine.

If the belt let go then the car was badly maintained.

Get a used engine .

The car is not worth a professional rebuilt.

Find a used engine or walk away from it .
